Protecting Your Servers During Natural Disasters

Regardless of your organization's geographical location, some risk exists. Something as seemingly minor as a rain storm can cause wind damage or minor flooding that can have a destructive effect on your company's ability to do business. One of the greatest threats to an organization in a natural disaster is data loss. Many businesses today both store the majority of their business data electronically on servers as well as rely on IT infrastructure to perform core parts of their business function. An organization cannot, therefore, afford to lose access to these essential components. With careful planning, however, a company can mitigate damage to their servers and/or recover swiftly in the event … [Read more...]

Randall Kemp, "An Irrational Truth, Or The Marginalization of People Through Classification in Natural Disaster Settings" Image by broken thoughts Help in Reassuring Children after Natural Disasters and School Shootings Natural disasters such as the one we are witnessing in Japan are disturbing to all of us as we watch helplessly as people lose their lives and their homes. The added threat of nuclear power plants releasing radiation is frightening and the topic of great discussion among adults. Japan is currently the primary topic on many television and radio broadcasts, with many "experts" talking endlessly about the dire consequences of the power plant explosions. Our children and teens cannot help but be exposed to some of this information, and many of them may become traumatized by the scenes of devastation and discussions about nuclear power safety. Many teachers are talking about the events in school, which leads to kids talking about it among themselves, … [Read more...]

Disaster Survival Kits Protect Our Families

Disaster Survival Kits Protect Our Families We have all heard the news reports recently, with information about all the disasters that have hit around the nation and yes, across the world. With tsunamis, hurricanes, earthquakes, tornados, and any other number of natural disasters, and then there are those man made terror attacks that receive attention. Having disaster survival kits around to help during these types of events is becoming more and more critical for everyone. When we see people lining up to purchase bottled water in Japan after the tsunami which destroyed the water supply, not to mention other essential elements of everyday life, it is not hard to understand why the idea of having survival kits ready is gaining in popularity. While most of us recognize the need for emergency medical kits to take care of the little emergencies that occur from time to time around the home, but it is becoming more apparent that disaster survival kits may someday become critical to our … [Read more...]

Practical tips in Preparation for Earthquakes and Other Natural Disasters

Randall Kemp, "An Irrational Truth, Or The Marginalization of People Through Classification in Natural Disaster Settings" Image by broken thoughts Practical tips in Preparation for Earthquakes and Other Natural Disasters With the unfolding of recent events following the devastating earthquake (2011 Tohoku Earthquake) in the north-east of Japan – a series of tsunamis as well as a major nuclear crisis – many have no doubt been hit with fear and perhaps a reminder of how unprepared they themselves are should a similar natural disaster happen close to where they live. I have lived in Japan most of my life and have experienced earthquakes regularly – most of which were small and insignificant – so it's easy to become desensitized to just how powerful and catastrophic these acts of God can be. But if there is a nation on the face of this planet that can recover from earthquakes and subsequent tsunamis, I think it is Japan! Having not only experienced the most … [Read more...]

HUFFSTUTTER 2008, MT FUJI AND RURAL VILLAGE...painted from my memory of my time in Japan 1961 through the eve of 1964... Natural Disaster Survivors Left With Psychological Impact We have been well served in our country by the contributions of the defense forces, local community health and rescue services, state and local government disaster response units and other agencies that have kept our communities functioning during natural disasters. Loss of life in situations where there has been time to prepare or evacuate has been minimal, and while property damage is heart-wrenching for those people affected, knowing loved family members have survived has been a enormous comfort for our communities. Practical considerations can be reduced to written plans and training provided to emergency personnel to get the best result in an evacuation situation, so our ability to do the … [Read more...]

Dealing With Natural Disasters at Home

Our Class Wiki Page: Natural Disasters Inquiry Image by theunquietlibrary Dealing With Natural Disasters at Home Every area of the world has some likelihood of a natural disaster occurring. If you reside in the United States, you perhaps know residents on the East Coast and in the South worry about hurricanes, while those in the Midwest are more concerned with the possibility of tornadoes. Residents of the Southwest have to be prepared for harsh monsoons and possible desert droughts, while those on the West Coast prepare for earthquakes and mudslides. Plainly put, regardless of where you reside, you need to be prepared at home for a natural disaster. The first thing that you need to contemplate is what exactly you are likely to experience in your area of the country. In other words, residents of Utah don't need life vests for hurricanes, just like homes in Arizona don't have a basements or storm shelters simply because they aren't as needed in that area of … [Read more...]

Coping With Natural Disasters

Teams Working on the Natural Disasters Wiki Image by theunquietlibrary Coping With Natural Disasters When you have major natural disasters occur like the cyclone in Myanmar (Burma), the massive earthquake and on-going aftershocks in China, the devastating tornadoes in the US or the last major hurricane Katrina, everyone is dramatically affected by the pain and suffering. The massive destruction and chaos left behind in such widespread areas is not only devastating for the people directly hurt by the disaster but very disconcerting and unsettling for people everywhere. In the two most recent disasters we can - in real time - see and feel the pain and utter hopelessness of those directly involved in China and can only image the devastation and destruction in Myanmar. The same holds true for all the tornado victims in the Midwest and Southeastern US – or fire victims in California and Florida. And now, the storm center has again predicted for this … [Read more...]
